Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems capture the sun’s energy using silicon cells. The cells convert the sunlight into electricity, which can be used to run electrical appliances, heating & lighting both domestically & commercially. Although sunshine is not necessary for PV panels to work, the greater the light intensity, the greater the production of electricity.
All that is required is a roof or wall facing within 90 degrees of “due South” with no (or very little) shading from trees or buildings, etc. Grid connected PV panels require very little maintenance, although you should ensure that any nearby trees are kept trimmed and the panels are relatively clean. However, we do recommend that the electrical installation part of the installation is checked regularly by a qualified electrician.
In April 2010 the government introduced the Feed In Tariffs, enabling you to get paid for producing your own electricity. There are three separate ways that the Tariffs help you make money from generating your own energy:
You earn an income for every unit of electricity you generate. This is guaranteed for 20 years and tax-free for residential properties.
Any electricity that is generated is then free to use making you less susceptible to rising energy costs.
Electricity generated that is not used can be sold back to the national grid at approximately 3p per unit.
