Generating your own electricity is sometimes associated with off-grid living, but all homes with relevant roofs can benefit from the installation of solar panel PV systems. Sustainable electricity is also cheaper with solar panels, which makes this a great consideration for homeowners. This article covers:
- How solar PV works and how the systems that we install generate sustainable and cleaner electricity for your home. We also cover how to check if your home is appropriate for solar panel installation.
- The importance of investing in sustainable electricity and how this is important for futureproofing your property. Solar panels are also known to increase the overall value of your property, which makes them an even better investment for your home.
- How technology is improving in the Solar PV industry; from app controlled inverters to battery storage, systems are getting more efficient.
We are one of the leading independent suppliers and installers of solar panels in Ireland, working across all counties. We will work with you to design and install a solar PV system that suits you and helps you maximise all of the benefits of sustainable solar technology and electricity. How Does Solar PV Generate Sustainable Electricity?
Solar PV systems use negative and positive layers with silicon semiconductors. When sunlight hits the solar cells, photons or particles of light are absorbed by this material. This then causes an electrical field to be generated, which then generates an electrical charge. For properties, this is converted by the inverter and can be used to power the property directly. Surplus energy can then be sold back to the grid for profit, used to heat water (via a diverter) or stored in a PV battery system for use when generation is lower.
The amount of electricity that you will be able to generate will depend on the average sunlight hours that you get per year, as well as the size of your roof, as this will allow you to install more solar panels in your system. The orientation of your solar PV system is also important, with south-facing roofs generating the most electricity compared to east and west-facing orientations. In Ireland, we typically see between 1,100 – 1,600 hours of sunlight each year. Solar panels don’t need direct sunlight to work either; they use daylight so can still generate power on overcast days.
The Importance of Sustainable Electricity
Individuals are always looking to reduce their environmental impact and solar panels are the perfect way to do this. The only by-product of the process is heat, so solar PV is the cleanest source of electricity generation on the planet. As well as this, you save money on the electricity that you produce and after you have paid off your system from your return on investment, you are effectively generating free electricity for your property.
Homeowners are also understandably concerned about volatile energy prices. Generating your own electricity from solar PV systems reduces grid dependence and reduces the cost of monthly bills, as well as insulating from fluctuating prices. As well as delivering energy independence, Solar PV systems are also better for the environment.
Because of these benefits, investing in solar panels is known to increase the overall value of your property. When it’s time to sell, the new buyers will also have access to the benefits of their solar PV system, while the Building Energy Rating (BER) will also improve.
The Future of Sustainable Electricity and Technology
Will solar PV become standard in new properties? Solar panels are often now installed or recommended for new properties and this has shown just how versatile and popular this technology has become. New build properties also benefit from the option of integrated roof panels.
